AHEC Scholar Spotlight

As a resident of Northern Michigan, Ruthann Strickland had a successful career in recreation and ski area management. After caring for her mother for six years until the time of her death, she decided to switch gears and started nursing school at Baker College in Cadillac. While caring for her mother she learned that,"though helping others live their best life is important, you must also remember to live your best life right along with them. Making this career change has afforded me the opportunity to do just that."

She learned about the AHEC Scholars Program after attending an informational meeting at Baker College. In her Junior year she became an AHEC Scholar and faced many challenges during that time, including the COVID 19 Pandemic. "Even though our didactic courses are virtual, I feel fortunate that I was able to continue my clinicals in person, as experiential learning is crucial to us at this time." Not only did Ruthann thrive in a challenging environment she recently completed her BSN and graduated from the AHEC Scholars Program all while being employed full time at a local long-term care rehab facility.

"I think AHEC Scholars afforded me the opportunity to supplement my nursing education with patient centered care specific information that's relevant to both rural and urban health disparities which I think will be beneficial in my practice," said Strickland. "It's going to allow me to be able to use that enhanced knowledge make me a more well-rounded nurse."

Looking toward the future, Ruthann has applied several positions that will allow her to give back to her rural community. No matter where she ends up on her career path, it is clear Ruthann Strickland will find a way to positively impact patient outcomes and make a difference in her local community.
