AHEC Scholars Spotlight: Joshua Atherton

A photo of Joshua AthertonMichigan AHEC Scholar Alumni, Joshua Atherton is a first-year resident at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences training in anesthesiology. He is a graduate of the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. Joshua joined the AHEC Scholars program while in medical school because he saw it as an opportunity to expand his knowledge and apply what he’s learned within the community. “I enjoyed the camaraderie among students from various universities across Michigan and the collaboration between students from different health and behavioral science disciplines.”

Joshua had the following advice to give to students interested in joining the Michigan AHEC Scholars program, “See this as an opportunity to learn, think critically, and apply information from subjects you may not have had previous exposure to including epidemiology, public health, behavioral health, socioeconomic gradients of health, and how you can use these lessons to better understand the diverse and complex health demands of your community, the State of Michigan and beyond. If that piques your interest, then I’d encourage you to join and see how AHEC can enhance your community impact and career through a broad and engaging learning experience.”
