Ubly Middle School Health and Human Service Career Exploration Program
The Thumb Community Health Partnership with support from the Mid Central AHEC and GST Michigan Works! hosted a program for 12 Ubly middle school and two mentoring high school students interested in human and health service careers this past February. Participants were able to explore nursing, emergency services, behavioral health, rehabilitation services, and more during the six-session offering.
Saginaw Area Health Career Pipeline Program
The fifth annual Spring 2024 Saginaw Area Health Career Pipeline Program kicked off in early March for 9th and 10th-grade high school students from ten high schools throughout the Great Lakes Bay region and a dozen college mentors from Saginaw Valley State University.
Throughout the eight-week program, students will explore health professions through a variety of hands-on experiences and professional insights from academic and community organizations including, the Central Michigan University College of Medicine Covenant HealthCare Simulation Center and the Gift-of-Life of Michigan. A mix of in-person and virtual sessions allows students to connect with health professionals from a wide array of backgrounds and fields including medicine, nursing, physician assistant, phlebotomy, ultrasound technician, psychiatrists, veterinary medicine and more.
The Mid Central AHEC in collaboration with Central Michigan University College of Medicine hosts this health exploration program that is made possible with funds from a trust managed by Huntington Bank.
Hands-on-Health: A Simulation & Skill Building Event
On Saturday, April 27th, the Mid Central AHEC in collaboration with Central Michigan University College of Medicine and the Thumb Community Health Partnership will host a health career and skill exploration event for high school students throughout the Mid Michigan and Thumb regions. The event will include a suture clinic, health professional and student panels, along with simulation stations developed by the Covenant HealthCare Simulation Center staff. This event is an opportunity for previous pipeline program participants from across the region to expand their experiences further as they continue to pursue their health and human career goals.
Public Health Pipeline Program – Coming Soon!
With the growing demand and awareness of public health professionals, the Mid Central AHEC is excited to collaborate with the Central Michigan University Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions public health program to develop a Public Health Pipeline Program. The program will provide 10-12th grade high school students an introduction to the vast array of sectors within the field of public health (epidemiology, policy, environmental, public safety, etc.) utilizing expertise from academic and community professionals along with having mentors and facilitators from the undergraduate and graduate level public health programs. The target goal is to host the inaugural program by the Fall of 2024.
