Biomedical Career Advancement Pipeline Program (BCAP) celebrates 10th anniversary

A group of BCAP students posing for a photo  The 10th annual Biomedical Career Advancement Pipeline Program (BCAP) was hosted this summer at Wayne State University School of Medicine. BCAP was founded by Dr. Janelle White PhD. This year’s program focused on Sickle Cell Anemia research. The goal of BCAP is to provide high school students with research opportunities and a chance to explore careers in the biomedical field. This year’s cohort had over 60 students from across Wayne County. Students are paired with research mentors and work in a lab. On Fridays, they complete Didactic training where they listened to presenters, participated in hands-on activities, and even had the opportunity to become CPR Certified. At the end of the program, students shared a final presentation detailing their work from the summer.

SERC Hosts Medical Mentors Pathway Program (M2P2)  A group of Medical Mentors Pathway Programs Students taking a group photo during a presentation

The 11th annual Medical Mentors Pathway Program (M2P2) took place this summer as a collaborative effort between SERC, DMC, and Karmanos Cancer Center. M2P2 was founded by Dr. Particia Uddyback. 18 students participated in this year’s program.

The six-week shadowing experience allows rising seniors and undergraduate students to experience three different medical specialties and what a typical day looks like for healthcare professionals. Students also complete didactics where they share their experiences and receive MCAT prep and professional development. At the end of the program, students complete a group presentation on Social Determinants of Health and an individual presentation presented before a panel of judges. Students receive a certificate and a stipend for completing the program.

The Southeast Regional Center looks forward to a continued partnership with both pathway programs as we work toward closing the disparity gap and shortage in the medical field. These hands-on programs encourage young people to pursue fulfilling careers in the healthcare field.
