Mid-Central Regional Center Update

Second Annual Saginaw Area Health Careers Pipeline Program

This Spring the Health Careers Pipeline Program returns to the Saginaw Area for the 2nd annual virtual offering. The program is hosted by the Mid-Central Area Health Education Center (MC AHEC) in partnership with Central Michigan University (CMU) College of Medicine (CMED) and funded by a trust managed by Huntington Bank. Dorothy Yu and Jordan Killingsworth are fourth-year CMU College of Medicine medical students collaborating with MC AHEC staff to develop and facilitate this year's program.

During the seven-week program, high school participants and their college mentors will explore a variety of health profession careers, educational pathways, health and wellness practices and leadership characteristics. Weekly sessions are conducted through Zoom enhanced by Poll Everywhere, an engagement response integrated technology tool, supplied at-home hands-on activities and touring of collaborating organization facilities. Through these activities and more, students will increase their understanding of the health field, build a network of contacts to support them in their exploration and develop confidence to further pursue their career dreams.

The 9th and 10th grade high school participants accepted into this year's program come from local Saginaw county high schools including Chesaning Union, Birch Run, Frankenmuth, Heritage, Nouvel Catholic Central, Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy and Valley Lutheran. The undergraduate college mentors are students currently enrolled at Central Michigan University, Delta College, Davenport University and Saginaw Valley State University, and they represent a wide variety of academic programs, health profession pursuits and prior extracurricular involvements.

MC AHEC is pleased with the continued support of the Saginaw area schools, staff and community in their efforts to bring the Health Careers Pipeline Program to underrepresented and underserved area youth interested in the health profession field and is looking forward to carrying out the second year of the Saginaw Area Health Career Pipeline Program this Spring.
