Michigan AHEC Updates

Michigan AHEC is announcing several personnel changes as the new five-year grant cycle begins this fall. After eight years at Michigan AHEC, Associate Program Director Thomas J. Reed is retiring in August 2022. Throughout his tenure with Michigan AHEC, Reed helped guide the organization through many changes including host partner transitions, two successful 5-year HRSA grant applications, the creation of the AHEC Scholars program and the addition of new IPE faculty from the WSU School of Social Work and the WSU Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. During his time with Michigan AHEC Reed executed eight consecutive balanced annual operating budgets and helped secure additional HRSA support and Cares Act funding for MI AHEC. He also helped to increase cost share and cash match from host partners throughout the state and successfully managed the continuity of program office support for the regional centers and AHEC leadership while moving programs and services to a virtual environment during the COVID pandemic. The entire staff and faculty of Michigan AHEC is grateful for Tom Reed's impactful leadership and service and wish him well in his retirement.

Leon Hudson, Jr. will be the new Associate Director of Michigan AHEC. He has served as Project Manager for Michigan AHEC for 10 years. He currently serves as a member of the National AHEC Organization (NAO) Board and is a member of NAO CORE (Committee on Research Outcomes and Evaluation). Leon is currently a doctoral student at Wayne State University's College of Education where he is studying in the Education, Evaluation and Research track. Congratulations on your promotion Leon!

Jill McGrath Horner has recently been promoted to Business Manager for Michigan AHEC. She has been with Michigan AHEC for 10 years and her previous postion was Budget Analyst. Congratulations on your promotion Jill!

Dr. Susan Wiers DNP, FNP-BC, Assistant Professor in the WSU College of Nursing and Michigan AHEC IPE faculty champion, recently announced her retirement. Dr. Wiers joined the WSU College of Nursing in 2016 and joined Michigan AHEC as an IPE faculty champion in 2021. As an IPE faculty champion, Dr. Wiers helped shape the curriculum of the AHEC Scholars Program and mentored second year AHEC Scholars in the final year of their program. Best wishes to Dr. Wiers in her retirement.
