In August, ten incoming freshman Wayne State University College of Nursing (CON) students from Detroit, MI participated in the Jacob Scholars Program (JSP) Pre-Immersion Week. Hosted the week before classes begin, Pre-Immersion includes exposure to university resources and development of a peer learning community. JSP students are exposed to community building amongst their cohort, share meals together and meet with faculty and staff.

Some key experiences in this year's Pre-Immersion Week included a historical tour of Detroit, a community service project at Gleaner's Community Food Bank and a tour of the CON Simulation Lab, including trying out the new virtual simulation program.Jacob Scholars Photo

The Jacobs Scholars Program is a comprehensive student program that employs evidence-based retention strategies (i.e., tutoring, mentoring, financial support, intrusive advising, pre-immersion) to increase the success of nursing students from traditionally underrepresented communities. It helps to diminish the social determinants that impede the successful retention and completion of our nursing program students from underrepresented groups. The WSU College of Nursing considers pre-immersion to be a critical element for setting direct-admit students up for success, and beginning their nursing educational journey with a very strong foundation.

The BCAP Scholars Program, an expansion of the summer Biomedical Career Advancement Pipeline (BCAP) Program, is in its second year with sixteen students.

The BCAP Scholars Program supports high school students from our most recent summer research program. Students engage in a 4-session intensive training fellowship to further develop summer research projects with WSU faculty mentors for presentation at WSU's Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS).

Sponsored by the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and Space Force, the Southeast Michigan regional JSHS is an annual symposium for high school students to present their research. In BCAP Scholars apply to present at the JSHS on February 24th, 2022 at Wayne State University in order to gain experience presenting in a competitive symposium. Scholarships and opportunities to attend nationals are available for top presenters.
