BCAP Summer Program Switches to Online Format

During this unprecedented time of the Covid-19 pandemic, upcoming summer programs have had to adapt to keep participants safe while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Because student safety is a top priority, the BCAP Program is changing its focus this year to an online format. The program will be shortened from 6 weeks to 4 weeks and will start on July 6, 2020. To facilitate the online format, each student will be provided with a Chromebook and internet access.

BCAP, the Biomedical Career Advancement Program, is a collaborative program between Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM), Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC), Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) and Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). BCAP was established in 2014 by Jennell White, PhD. Dr. White, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at WSU-SOM, is dedicated to exposing youth to careers in the health sciences.

"We are excited to be able to offer students the BCAP research experience this year in an online format," said Dr. Jennell White. "We are proud of the effort that went into providing a quality program while adapting to challenges presented by the current circumstances. There is a really great group of students this year and we are looking forward to a productive summer."

As in previous years, students will be matched with a faculty mentor and will complete a research project. Students will also attend professional development sessions and complete labs over video calls and on other digital platforms. After successfully completing the BCAP Program and presenting their research projects, students will receive a stipend and certificate at the closing ceremony on July 31, 2020.
