Brochure Shows Youth How to Climb Their Way to Health Care Careers
What do you get when you combine rock climbing and health care careers? Health Careers Rock!, a brochure aimed at encouraging young people to explore careers in health care. The informative pamphlet includes panels that educate middle school, high school, and college students about the duties, salaries, and preparation involved for some primary care careers on one side and features a full sized poster on the other. Students can examine careers in six areas: dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, public health, and social work.
The Michigan Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a program of Wayne State University, produced Health Careers Rock! Michigan AHEC strengthens the state’s health care workforce by recruiting, training, and retaining health professionals committed to increasing access to primary care. Through a statewide network of regional centers, Michigan AHEC prepares underrepresented and disadvantaged youth for health care careers, promotes clinical training opportunities for students in shortage areas, and provides continuing education programs for health professionals.
“Our pipeline brochure is one way we educate youth about and career opportunities in the growing health care industry,” said Dr. Ramona Benkert, Interim Associate Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs at the Wayne State University College of Nursing. “Our primary goal is to help address the shortage of health care workers in Michigan. We promote and expose youth to health care careers by sharing information and offering programs that give them a chance to see what doctors, dentists, nurses, and other health professionals do. We are excited about working with the Michigan School Counselors Association to make sure students are aware of these resources.”
When Michigan AHEC staff began developing ideas for the pipeline brochure, they were not thinking about winning awards. They focused on creating a guide that would inform young people about careers in the health industry and, hopefully, inspire them to explore those opportunities. The resulting rock-climbing themed piece provides youth with a colorful, creative, and comprehensive summary of what it takes to climb their way to a career in health care. The brochure also won a 2013 American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design USA magazine.
“We were pleasantly surprised and excited when we heard our brochure won an award,” said Benkert. “We just wanted to make the brochure interesting, informative, and fun so young people would be intrigued by it and consider choosing a career in health care.”
Many young people dream of pursuing careers in health care, which is one of the fastest growing industries in the nation. Health Careers Rock! is a resource you can share with them to help them make their dreams a reality. The brochures are available to schools throughout Michigan.
