AHEC Scholar Spotlight: Jordan Killingsworth
AHEC Scholar Jordan Killingsworth is a 4th year medical student and Central Michigan University's School of Medicine. Jordan grew up in the small town of Perry, MI and knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career in science or mathematics. "When I was old enough to understand various aspects of society, I realized that as low-income individuals, we would often be forced to make difficult decisions in regards to our health. I was also raised to help others whenever possible. These combined factors drove me to a career in medicine," says Jordan.
Jordan attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate studies in Biology and Spanish. After graduation he took a gap year before starting medical school to assist teachers with English instruction in Spain. During his first two years in medical school, Jordan mentored high school students for Michigan AHEC's Mid-Central Regional Center's Health Careers Pipeline Program. It was through that contact with Michigan AHEC that he learned about the AHEC Scholars Program and was accepted as member of its second cohort. Jordan has been an enthusiastic part of the AHEC Scholars Program and feels enriched by the experience. "AHEC Scholars allows its students to further their knowledge and understanding of social determinants of health and interprofessional practice. As healthcare professionals, it is important to keep in mind everything that affects our patients and their health outcomes. It is also important to work as a cohort to reduce negative health outcomes, eliminate disparities, and provide the best care possible."
As with all students, the current global pandemic has affected his last year in Medical School. "Applications and interviews for residency look a little different this year, and away rotations, which allow students to rotate at different institutions, are currently limited. However, we are trained to take on the challenges presented before us and look forward to what the future holds," added Jordan.
Whatever the future holds for Jordan Killingsworth, it sure to be a bright one. Michigan AHEC is proud to have played a role in furthering Jordan along in fulfilling his dreams to help people in need.
