The Biomedical Career Advancement Program Wraps Up Its 9th Year

The 2023 Biomedical Career Advancement Program (BCAP), a summer research experience for high school students (grades 10-12) interested in pursuing careers in health science, wrapped up its 9th year in a closing ceremony on August 4, 2023. Forty-five students from metro Detroit were selected to participate in the program this year. BCAP is a collaborative program between Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM), Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC) Southeast Regional Center hosted by Health Centers Detroit, Inc., Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN), and Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). BCAP was established in 2014 by Jennell White, PhD. Dr. White is an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology at WSU-SOM.

Throughout the six week program, students worked with a faculty mentor on an independent research project. Students also attended professional development sessions and conducted laboratory experiments throughout the program. After successfully completing the BCAP Program and presenting their findings at the closing day event, students received a monetary award and certificate at the closing ceremony.

Twelve Jacob Scholars Program Students Explore Campus and the Community During Pre-Immersion Week

In August, 12 incoming freshman Wayne State University College of Nursing (CON) students from the Detroit area participated in the Jacob Scholars Program (JSP) Pre-Immersion Week. Hosted the week before classes begin, Pre-Immersion includes exposure to university resources and development of a peer learning community. JSP students are exposed to community building amongst their cohort, share meals together and meet with faculty and staff.

Some key experiences in this year's Pre-Immersion Week included a trip to Nursing Detroit Training Center, CPR training and a tour of the CON Simulation Lab, including trying out the virtual simulation program.

The Jacobs Scholars Program is a comprehensive student program that employs evidence-based retention strategies (i.e., tutoring, mentoring, financial support, intrusive advising, pre-immersion) to increase the success of nursing students from traditionally underrepresented communities. It helps to diminish the social determinants that impede the successful retention and completion of our nursing program students from underrepresented groups. The WSU College of Nursing considers pre-immersion to be a critical element for setting direct-admit students up for success, and beginning their nursing educational journey with a very strong foundation.
