Southeast Regional AHEC Hosts Second Successful Nursing Workforce Diversity Pre-Immersion Week

Sixteen freshman WSU Nursing students recently completed a Nursing Workforce Diversity Pre-Immersion Week this August. Throughout the week, students engaged in sessions that enhance their academic success, some of which include: time management, study and test taking skills as well as mentoring sessions with faculty and nursing professionals. Students toured Children's Hospital and a Covenant Community Care clinic in Detroit. They were also connected to local attractions in Detroit such as the new QLine and the Detroit Historical Museum. As a service project at Gleaners Community Food Bank, students worked as team to pack over 2,300 pounds of food for neighbors in need.  The Nursing Workforce Diversity Program is part of a 4-year HRSA (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) grant that assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds to become registered nurses. The program also supports increased access to high-quality culturally-aligned registered nurse providers who reflect the diversity of the communities in which they serve.
